BOGURA, June 02: Repeated bumper production and fair market price are encouraging the banana growers to expand the production of the popular fruit across the district.
Sources said banana farming has created a great enthusiasm among farmers in the area for high profit.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said farmers had grown over 0.3 million tonnes of banana last year and they are expecting to grow over 0.4 million tonnes this season.
If the weather remains favourable, the target can be achieved, DAE officials added.
"Banana farmers are making healthy profit during Ramadan," said sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Abul Basar.
Locally-produced banana is sent to different districts across the country for high market demand, he further said.
Beneficiary farmer Golam Rabbany said the DAE arranges training on banana farming so that farmers can get their desired production.
Banana grows well in sandy char area. A good number of char dwellers have attained self-reliance by growing the popular fruit.
Banana farmer Lokaman Hossain said he has been cultivating banana over the last seven years.
He said it requires low production cost but gives a healthy return.
Sagor, Kathali, Sobri and Chapa are the most popular banana varieties among the cultivators in the district.
