Heavy rain, onrush of water inundate B’baria villages

BRAHMANBARIA, May 23 (UNB): At least 30 villages in Akhaura upazila of the district were submerged due to rain and onrush of water from Indian hills over the past several days.

Onrush of water from Indian hills through Kalndi canal along Akhaura Land port area inundated different areas and roads in Kalikapur, Birchandrapur, Abdulahipur, Bongerchar villages.

Besides, a number of villages under Maniand, Mogra and Dharkhar unions went under water following the collapse of an embankment of Hawra River in India's Trupra as well as onrush of water from Tripura hills causing immense suffering to locals.

A vast area of crops land, fish enclosure and roads in the area were submerged.

Farmers in the area have to face huge economic setback as their crops including Aman paddy and vegetables have been damaged by the floodwater.

Moreover, the flash floods washed away fish, frys from ponds and water bodies.

Jalal Uddin, chairman of Dakkhin Union Parishad, said water coming through Kalandi canal could not be stopped as well as these stranded water can't be cleared from the area instantly.

Akhaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Samsuzzaman said villagers who are living in homes made of clay have been evicted.
