Hybreed bitter gourd growers happy with fair price, bumper production

BOGURA, Dec 07: Hybreedbitter gourd growers in Bogura district are seen happy as they are getting both fair market price and bumper output of the vegetablein the current season.

The farmers are stockpiling the vegetable after harvesting from field with male and female labourers. Some are sorting fresh crops

and rotten and pest attacked ones carefully as the customers seek fresh one.

The crop cultivation boosts the economic condition of extreme poor farmers of Dhunot, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Sherpur, Sonatola, Sariakandi, Gabtoly, Shajahanpur, Shibganj, Dupchanchia and sadarupazilas of the district.

Meanwhile, a good number of farmers have started attaining solvency as they are selling each maund of bitter gourd at Tk 3200 to 3500 this season though they had sold a maund of vegetable at Tk 2000 to 2200 last year.

Farmers are getting three-time profit cultivating hybreedbitter-gourd this current season, said sub-assistant agriculture officer FaridurRahman. The cultivation of the greens would be double next year as they are making good profit, he added.

Meeting local demand, the wholesalers are exporting average 05 to 08 trucks with hybreedbitter gourd to Dhaka and other districts every week. The amount of exporting may increase next month as the farmers will harvest the crop in full swing.

A bitter gourd cultivatorRipon Kumar under Kahalooupzila said he cultivated hybrid bitter gourd on 15 decimals of land spending Tk 8000 this season aiming to be self-reliant. He has harvested ten maunds of crops and sold at Tk 38,000.

He is expecting to sell rest of bitter at Tk 12,000 to 15,000 if the price remains high till next month. He could sell his produced greens from his filed as the wholesalers visit the locality to purchase bitter gourd from the farmers directly.

Md DulalHossain, deputy director of Department of Agriculural Extension (DAE) , said farmers have been provided with all sorts of necessary agri-input to grow fresh bitter gourd this current season.
