RANGPUR, Mar 02: The jackfruit cultivators under Rangpur agriculture region are optimistic of a good production of the popular fruit during this current season.
Due to satisfactory profit and easy cultivation process the growers are showing their interest to cultivate the fruit commercially on their lands, sources said.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) the growers have cultivated jackfruit on 3,050 hectares of land in five districts of the region with a production target of around 0.10 million tonnes of fruits.
The districts are: Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha and Nilphamari districts.
At present the growers are passing busy time in taking care of their jackfruit orchards. If the weather condition remains conducive, the region will witness a good yield of the juicy and fleshy fruit this season.
DAE also suggested the growers to contact the agriculture officials for necessary helps, sources also said.
This fruit is being cultivated plentifully both in orchards and homesteads of the region, sources said. The cultivation of this fruit is on the rise due to the high demand, sources added.
Najmul, a jackfruit grower of Baniapara area under Taraganj Upazila in Rangpur, said he has over 200 jackfruit trees in his orchard. He is expecting good profit from the sale of the fruit in markets this season.
Shariful Islam, another jackfruit grower of Tilokpara village at Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district told this correspondent that he has 150 jackfruit trees in his orchard.
He is optimistic of a good production of it this season, if the weather condition remains congenial, he added.
The DAE Rangpur official sources said a good number of farmers of the region have begun cultivation of different fruit items including jackfruits instead of paddy and some other crops as they are getting more profit from fruits cultivation.
Its cultivation is also playing a vital role in changing the socio-economic condition of the peasants of the region, sources added.
