JOYPURHAT, June 30: Arum cultivators in the district are delighted over the market price this year.

Growers said they achieved a bumper yield of the popular vegetable this season.

Each maund of arum is selling at Tk 2,400 to Tk 2,600 in the retail markets and Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,100 in the wholesale markets.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), over 650 hectares came under the production of arum with the production target of 700 tonnes.

They farmers are getting over 40 to 45 maunds of yield from a bigha of land whereas they had achieved some 33 to 36 maunds from the same land last year.

During a visit to different villages this correspondent saw traders purchasing the item direct from the farmers at the field.

"I have cultivated arum on 42 decimals of land this season spending Tk 9,000. I expect to achieve around 50 maunds of yield," said farmer Rabbany.

He further said, "I am selling them my produce at Tk 50 to Tk 55 in the local market."

Arum cultivators are happy over the yield and market price, said an official at the DAE.

"We encourage the farmers to grow the vegetable on the commercial basis in the area for more profit", the official added.
