Jute growers earn extra money by selling stalks in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, Sept 18: The jute farmers of Gopalganj Sadar upazila in the district are getting extra benefit from the sale of jute stalks every year.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj official sources, a total of 7,160 hectares of land have been brought under jute cultivation at Sadar upazilas in the district this year.

The production target is 16,036 tonnes from which 29,698 tonnes (8,01,850 maunds) of jute stalks wk 100 to Tk 110, sources said.

Sahadat Hossain Tagore (65), a jute farmer of village Gopalpur under Sadar upazila in Gopalganj district said, "I have cultivated jute on two acres (local 4 bighas) of land this year and I received above 60 maunds of jute market price of which is Tk 1,08,000.

Per mound is selling at Tk 1,700 to Tk 1,800 but side by side I got about 30 to 32 vans full (200 masunds) of jute stalks present market price of which is about Tk 30,000", Sahadat said.

Ramesh Chandra Bramha, Deputy Director (DD), Agriculture, Gopalganj told the FE that farmers are cultivating more jute for extra benefit. Jute stalk is being used not only for fuel but for fencing vinery of betel and roofing

Lablu Mollah (60), a jute stalks trader of Gaournadi in Barisal told the FE, "I have been involved in this business for the last seven years. Jute stalks are essential for betel leaf farming, so we purchase jute stalks in this area every year because there are huge farming of betel leaf in our areas at Gaournadi.

Monjur Morshed, Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO) of Suktail union under Gopalganj Sadar upazila said, in recent years farmers in this region are getting a good benefit from jute stalks. As a result, farmers are more interested in cultivating jute.
