LGED initiates project to preserve history of Liberation War

SYLHET, Oct 08: Steps are being taken to improve six sites in Sunamganj district to preserve memory and history of the Liberation War.

The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) will implement the project at a total cost of Tk 210 million.

Development and preservation of each of the site would cost Tk 3.5 million, an official informed.

The selected sites include Ahsanmara bridge area in Dakshin Sunamganj upazila, on the Sylhet-Sunamganj Highway, Shyamarchar riverbank site in Derai upazila, Shahid Abdul Hai memorial area and Shahid Mofazzal Hossain memorial area in Dharmapasha upazila, Sachnabazar memorial area in Jamalganj upazila, Sunamagnj Government Primary Training Institute's killing site and Barchhara killing ground in Tahirpur upazila.

As a project had been taken up centrally, the LGED has already asked for detail information about the sites and their historical importance of liberation war time, an official of LGED informed.

The upazila and district-level officials have been working on the project while separate design for each of the project sites would be prepared soon, said the official, adding, then tendering process for project implementation would be started.

Sunamganj district has a good number of such places of liberation war time since it is located on a frontier position and stands on the foothills of Meghalaya.

Freedom fighters in good number as well as the political leaders and organisers had entered into the Indian camps through different hilly points for joining armed training programme of freedom fighters there.
