Locals recover rice from three ponds in Jhenidah

JHENIDAH, Aug 28: About 3,000 kg of rice have been recovered from three ponds of Haripur village under Maharajpur union of Jhenidah Sadar on Tuesday.

In the presence of Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Shammi Islam, local union council Chairman Khurshid Alam lifted the rice from the ponds.

Locals said from the noon Monday, they felt bad smell of rotten rice coming out of a pond in Haripur village. At that time the people of the village got to the pond and found traces of rice.

However, the exact quantity of rice could not be ascertained in the ponds.

Locals apprehended that there are about 3,000 kg of rice there.

The union council chairman Khurshid Alam said on the day before the Eid, the rice trader Azizul purchased 2,600 kg rice for Tk 26 per kg from an electric carpenter named Sabuj.

Buying rice from different VGF cardholders Sabuj sold it to Azizul. After hearing the news of rice in other places of the district, businessman Azizul dropped his rice into some ponds beside his house.

Azizul has been absconding since the incident.

Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Shammi Islam said after being informed they went there. The rice is being recovered. If rice belonged to the businessman Azizul himself, action will be taken after investigation.
