Locals suffer in absence of a bridge over Chikli river

RANGPUR, Nov 05: The people of different villages under Badarganj upazila in the district have long been suffering a lot in absence of a permanent bridge over the river Chikli at Vangrirghat area of Damodarpur union in the upazila.

Around 30,000 people of 15 villages are being compelled to depend on boat to cross the river which becomes serious hazardous during rainy season.

Business and public health services are severely being hampered in the areas as the people living on both sides of the river cannot travel easily between the upazila headquarters due to lack of a bridge over the river.

The school going children face great difficulties in reaching their institutions by boat. Many of them do not go to school in rainy season for fear of accidents.

But no step has been taken so far to build a concrete bridge over the river, locals alleged.

Farmers of the areas are the worst sufferers as they are facing setback to carry their products to different areas.

Sabu, a vegetable trader of Pramanikpara village said they can hardly make any profit as they have to spend extra money as carrying cost.

At the time of election campaigns the local political leaders make repeated pledges to build a bridge over the river but they become oblivious about it once elected public representative, he also said.

Chairman of Damodarpur Union Parishad Azizul Haq said, they have informed the local MP of the matter. He is expected to take necessary steps to erect a permanent bridge over the river in the area to ease public sufferings, he added.
