Low-price rice on sale for Sylhet ultra-poor

SYLHET, Nov 06: The government's low-price rice selling programme of the current season for ultra-poor is going on in Sylhet division.

The dealers have already taken their delivery for November, officials at the Food Department said on Tuesday.

A cardholder is allowed to buy 30 kg rice at the rate of Tk 10 per kg per month. Since the month of September, the dealers have taken 16,570 tonnes of rice, of which they have already sold out 14,714 tonnes to the ultra-poor in the division till Monday last.

Of the total, the dealers in Sylhet drew 1876 tonnes of rice and sold 1,798 tonnes while in Moulvibazar it is 3,440 tonnes and 2,720 tonnes.

In Habiganj, the figures are 7,357 tonnes and 4,817 tonnes respectively.

The dealers in Sunamganj however have already drawn 5,898 tonnes of rice while sold 5,380 tonnes, the official said.

As many as 243,724 poor people are listed for the programme in Sylhet division, official sources said.

It includes 30,713 in Sylhet, 43,377 in Moulvibazar, 78,044 in Habiganj and highest 91,590 in the district of Sunamganj.

Although some "inappropriate" names were included in the list of the beneficiaries at the beginning, those were dropped on enquiry to make the list correct, informed the Regional Controller of Food, Sylhet division, Md Anisuzzaman.

On investigation, about 30,000 such names were dropped in phases, the official further said.

On the other hand, the dealerships of 12 rice traders, selected for the programme were cancelled on charge of irregularities in different areas of Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj districts.

Some of them were sued. Besides, Actions were taken in a number of specific cases of irregularities in sale of rice, the official informed further.

The government had launched the programme last year for five months, considered as lean period from September to November and March and April.
