RAJSHAHI, Oct 06: A viral disease, known as lumpy skin disease, is spreading fast among cattle-heads of Paba and Mohadevpur upazilas of Rajshahi and Naogaon districts.
In Paba upazila, some cattle-heads have been affected in Naohata village whereas cattle heads of Indai village among other villages have been affected in Mohadevpur upazila.
According to sources, lumpy skin disease is a viral disease which only affects cows and buffaloes. This disease was first detected in Zambia in 1929, later it spread to all countries of the world.
In 2013, the disease spread to Middle Eastern countries and in 2014-2015, it spread to Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan and surrounding countries.
It spread to Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Serbia and Cosovo in 2016 and in 2019 it spread to India and China and for the first time the disease is seen to spread in Naohata of Paba and in Indai Mohadevpur.
Cattle head of Khalek and Shahidul, Jiten, Nayan, Kartik and Ujjal have been attacked with the disease.
Salim Uddin Tarafder, MP, along with Mohadevpur Upazila Chairman Ahsan Habib Bhodon, Upazila Animal Resource Officer Khursid Alam and Chairman of Enayetpur Union Mehedi Hasan visited the Indai village recently.
The MP directed the upazila animal resource officer to render free treatment to the affected animals and to create awareness among people about the bad effects and possible measure to cure the disease. He also attended some camps rendering free treatment of the disease in some places of the upazila.
Sources said, a workshop with Rural Medical Practitioners and cattle farm owners of 10 unions of the upazila was held at the hall room of the office of Animal Resources where detailed concepts of the disease was discussed and leaflets were distributed among farmers of the unions.
Dr. Khurshid Alam, Upazila Animal Resource Officer informed so far 200 cows and buffaloes of the upazila have been attacked with the lumpy disease. Only cattle-heads are attacked with the disease and it does not affect human beings.
