SYLHET, Oct 05: Veterinary services in the Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj is being suffered greatly due to manpower shortage for years although a nice building has been constructed there for the upazila livestock office and its hospital. The area is renowned for its good stock of veterinary.

The office is established on a plot of 101 decimals of land at the upazila headquarters for accommodating veterinary hospital and artificial insemination centre in addition the upazila level livestock office.

However, due to absence of the posts of seven important employees, those failed to deliver any service for the livestock brought to the government-run institution for long, a number of local alleged.

As per government provision, 12 officers including the upazila Livestock Officer are to be posted here whereas only five are working. Even minor surgeries of sick animals can't be done due to the absence of veterinary surgeon at the hospital.

The post of Upazila Assistant Veterinary officer along with the two posts of veterinary field assistants had long been lying vacant. Besides, the posts of field assistant and two posts of office assistants had been lying vacant causing much for the office.

Since the Madhabpur upazila is a bordering one and located close to the neighbouring Bijoynagar and Nasirnagar upazilas with an easy communication link people bring their cattle here for required services. But they have to go back disappointed due to the absence of required staff, alleged a number of locals while demanding immediate filling of vacant posts to make the hospital a functional one.

Meanwhile, the Zakiganj Government High School has been running amid a severe crisis of teachers as well as other basic amenities for long, causing much for the students. Even on repeated moves by different quarters, the situation remained unchanged as yet while the concerned authorities didn't bother as yet for the government-run institution located on a remote bordering upazila town, over 90 km off the district and divisional city of Sylhet.

As many as 24 posts of teachers of the school remained vacant against the total sanctioned posts of 28. Only 4 teachers are looking after the academic activities of 550 students of 10 sections for long as the authority can't post more teachers to meet up the situation by providing teaching to the students.

Only two teachers against five sanctioned posts have to see the classes of grade four while the two teachers have to manage the 10 sections of classes from grade six to 10. Each of these classes has two sections.

A number of guardians said the common students are being deprived of getting proper tuition mainly due to teacher shortage for long. Their fate is just uncertain as it is impossible for the 4 teachers to see the 550 students' tuition, they added. As a regular practice the students of two sections have to sit together for attending a class. Often they are seen moving around purposeless as classes get suspended.

Acting Headmaster of the High School Jamal Uddin said, "We had to manage two local teachers just to keep things going. It isn't possible to run the institution this way. We have already informed the authority about the unmanageable situation and requested for immediate appointment of teachers."
