Magura man sets example by growing pearls in ponds

MAGURA, Nov 15: Pearls can be produced in ponds. One Abul Hossen Khan of Magura made it possible.
Abul Hossen Khan of village Keshtapur under Magura sadar upazila was passing idle time due to corona . Consequently, he took mobile phone as his companion . At one stage he came to know about pearls producing in pure water through YouTube.
Subsequently with the help of two experts of India and Patuakhli he started pearl cultivation . He brought his six ponds measuring three acres under pearl cultivation by using bagging method . Under the method design is inscribed into oyster .Then oyster is kept under water pushing into bag. Then the oysters like fishes are provided with food two times a week. The foods include oil cake , cow dung, TSP and Urea fertiliser. Pearl takes 10 to 12months to be produced.
On contact, Abul Hossen told this correspondent , "I have cultivated pearl in 25 thousand oysters and I am expecting one lakh pearl. At the same time I am cultivating fish in my pond as fish and pearl cultivation can go together enriching one another.
I started pearl cultivation only out of hobby. Now I am thinking to cultivate pearl on commercial basis . He added at present pearls are not being exported to foreign countries. Government should take initiative in this regard."
With the cultivation and export of pearls government can earn huge foreign currency creating vast employment opportunity, he addeds.
When contacted, Magura sadar upazila fishery officer Sharif Hasan Shohag said water and weather of this district are congenial for pearl cultivation . Huge employment can be created in this district through pearl cultivation and we are ready to cooperate every entrepreneurs, he added.
