MAGURA, Apr 07: Magura Medical College, the public medical college in Magura district, is struggling to stay afloat amid some precarious conditions.

Magura Medical College started functioning on August 26, 2018 in the old building of Magura 250-bed Hospital.

But absence of own campus, lack of required land, shortage of teachers and residential facilities for students are hampering academic activities badly in the institution.

Finally, decision in a recent meeting over closure of six medical colleges, including Magura Medical College, has raised a grave

concern among the students as well as Magura people.

Every day different political, social and cultural organisations are staging demonstrations in Magura town protesting such decision in the meeting.

On the other hand, such decision has created an adverse impact on acquisition of land for the medical college.

Magura Medical College sources informed, health and education welfare department approved acquisition of 25 acres of land for the college in Parla and Goalkhali area under Magura sadar upazila.

But due to unknown reason, the initiative was stalled. Consequently the college is being run in Magura 250-bed Hospital instead of own campus.

On the other hand, doctors' residential quarters are being used for the residence of male students for want of a college hostel.

But student sources said plaster is falling apart from the roof of the stuff quarters almost every day. A number of cracks have developed in the roof turning the building risky.

A rented building in hospital area of Magura town is being used for the residence of female students.

Students are being deprived of proper education due to extreme crisis of teachers in the college.

The college has only 51 teachers in anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, community and forensic medicine departments while the requirement is 84 .

On contact , educationist Professor Habibul Hasan said, "We regard Magura Medical College as an asset of Magura people. However, acquiring land for the college at a snail's pace is unfortunate. Decision on cancellation of the medical college after six years of its foundation is unwise and absurd."

When contacted, Prof Kamrul Hasan, principal of Magura Medical College, admitted that land for the college is yet to be acquired. He also admitted that a teacher crisis is prevailing in the college.

He added, "We have received no letter from the authorities concerned over cancellation of the college. However, the matter was discussed in a recent meeting."
