Magura spinach growers eye Tk 50m profit this season

MAGURA, Jan 18: Magura spinach growers are expecting to make a profit of Tk 50 million this season.

Sources said a bumper production of the leafy vegetable has achieved in the district. Growers are also happy over the market price. Spinach is being sold at Tk 20 per kg in the local kitchen market.

The DAE, Magura, sources said a total of 325 hectares of land have been brought under spinach farming in the district this year.

Murad Hossein of Akshi village under Sadar upazila said he brought two bighas of land under the cultivation of the vegetable. "I have already made a profit of Tk 25,000 and am expecting to earn Tk 15,000 more till the end of the season", he added.

Another farmer Golam Rasul of Beroil village said he has been growing the vegetable commercially for over three years. Farmers grow the item every season due to low production cost and fair market price, he added.

Moinuddin, a vegetable wholesaler of the district town, said the district produces quality spinach. Spinach worth Tk 0.3 million to 0.4 million are sent to different areas across the country from the district everday.

DAE official Gobinda Das said this year farmers have achieved a bumper production of the winter delicacy. "We encourage the growers to cultivate spinach on more land. We also provide seeds and arrange training programme every year for them", he added.
