Maize production increases in Tangail char areas

TANGAIL, Dec 09: Maize cultivation is increasing in the vast char areas in the district.

Horticulture officer of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, Ruhul Amin said maize farming has been expanding in the area for the last couple of years for high market prices.

The DAE and other agri-related offices have been supporting the growers in this connection by providing high-yielding seeds and quality fertilisers and insecticides.

They also arrange training courses for the interested growers.

Experts said char areas are suitable for growing quality maize.

The crop is popular among the grassroots growers as it requires less irrigation.

Farmers in char areas along the Jamuna in Bhuapur and Sadar upazilas and other part of the district are expecting a bumper yield of maize this year.

Char areas people cultivating maize at a very low coast because of no need fertilizer, insecticide and irrigation and nursing same as the corps, so less cultivation coast high market demand farmers gating good profit.

Many farmers said char area of Bhuapur upazila is well-known for producing quality maize in the district.

Hasan Ali, son of Bhuapur upazila, said he is growing the crop on two bighas of land and expecting to make Tk 30,000 to Tk 35,000 net profit.

Deputy Director of DAE Abdur Razzaque said farmers of the district are showing more interest in farming maize for high market prices.
