Man gets life term for killing child in M’singh

MYMENSINGH, Feb 06 (UNB): A Mymensingh court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment unto death for the abduction and murder of a child in 2016.

Mymensingh Additional Sessions Judge Ali Munsur delivered the verdict on Thursday, sentencing Shaheed Mia of Nandail upazila. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 0.1 million (1 lakh) on him.

However, two other accused in the case, Taher Uddin and Tahura Begum, were acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

According to the prosecution, Shaheed Mia had a longstanding dispute with his neighbor, Abdul Kaiyum, over the demarcation of a boundary wall.

On August 15, 2016, Shaheed abducted Kaiyum's child, Tasin, and later demanded ransom money over the phone. When his demands were not met, Shaheed strangled the child on August 17 and hid the body in a septic tank.

Police recovered Tasin's decomposed body two days later, on August 19.

Following the incident, a murder case was filed with Nandail Police Station.
