GAIBANDHA, Feb 18: A good number of brick kilns are running without any official approval in the district, posing a threat to environment and public health.
Most of the brick kilns have been set up near educational institutions and croplands in seven upazilas of the district.
According to the Department of Environment (DoE), there are 125 brick kilns in Gaibandha district. Of them, only 16 are authorised and 109 are illegal.
Child workers are seen working at the illegal brick kilns which have been established under the local administration's nose.
Fruit trees and medicinal plants are being used in the brick kilns, local people said.
Black smoke is constantly emitting from the brick kilns. Various substances, including carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and
carbon dioxide, are also causing air pollution.
Crops on huge agricultural land close to the brick kilns are facing risks of destruction.
Environmental activist Maruf said, "If no action is taken even after the directive to stop these illegal brick kilns, we should launch public movement."
Gaibandha DoE Assistant Director Muhammad Hedayatul Islam said, "We have already launched a campaign against illegal brick kilns." Local administration, led by the executive magistrate, conducted two drives, fining five brick kilns Tk 1.6 million (16 lakh).
