Market prices delight Tangail papaya cultivators

TANGAIL, May 15: Papaya growers of the district are happy over the present market price.

Sources from the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said papaya cultivation is gaining popularity in the district. A good number of farmers have improved their socio-economic condition by growing the fruit.

Papaya cultivation is easy. It requires low cost. Farmers grow the popular fruit for easy cultivation process and high market price. The DAE provides all necessary support to the farmers in this connection, sources added.

Some 1,250 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the fruit with the production target of 37,500 tonnes.

Trader Anisur Rahman said papaya growers are making a handsome profit due to high market price.

Farmer Aftab Ali of Hatibanda village under Shakhipur upazila said he cultivated papaya on one bigha of land and made a profit of Tk 30,000 so far. The grower said he is expecting to earn more profit this season.

Among the twelve upazila of the district, Modhupur is well-known for producing quantity papaya. Some 600 hectares of land in the upazila were brought under the farming of papaya, DAE sources said.
