Moulvibazar, Sunamganj achieve rice procurement target

SYLHET, Jan 15: Rice procurement target is achieved in Moulvibazar and Sunamganj districts of Sylhet division this season. The local Food Department bought 1207 tonnes of parboiled rice from the two districts during the drive which was started from December 03.

Official sources said the target was set at 676 tonnes for Moulvibazar and 547 tonnes for Sunamganj. As the target has been fulfilled, the authority has decided to close the drive for the region within a few days.

Regional Controller of Food, Sylhet, Md Anisuzzaman said no rice procurement drive was conducted in Sylhet and Habiganj districts of the region.

During the last year's Aman season a total of 9,237 tonnes of rice were procured in the four districts of the division. It includes 1231 tonnes of par-boiled and 8176 tonnes of non-parboiled rice. Comparatively Sylhet and Habiganj districts are better yield areas of T-Aman.

Meanwhile, the DAE officials expects production of a total of over 950,000 tonnes of T-Aman paddy this year as there had been good yield of the crop although rains and floods had caused much in different areas of the region at the beginning of the season. Many farmers had to transplant for the second time after the floods had damaged or washed away the croplands.
