OUR CORRESPONDENTS
Mustard farmers expect to achieve a bumper production this season as a favourable climate is prevailing in different parts of the country.
Our Correspondent from Rangpur says, farmers of five districts in Rangpur division have cultivated mustard with much enthusiasm as edible oil prices are on the rise. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Rangpur, around 78,236 hectares of land have been brought into mustard cultivation in five districts under Rangpur division.
The districts are Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat. Per hectare production target has been fixed at 1.6 tonnes.
Asadul, a mustard grower in Alampur area of Taraganj upazila in Rangpur, told The Financial Express that he cultivated mustard on 3 bighas of land and the yield was around 17 maunds last year. He earned more than Tk 51,000.
This year, he is optimistic of earning more profit from the sales of his produce.
This time, he expects to get about 07 maunds of mustard per bigha of land. If the market price remains at least Tk 3400-3500 per maund, the farmers will be more enthusiastic about mustard cultivation, he added.
Hamidul Mia, a farmer of Haragachh area of Kaunia upazila in Rangpur, told The FE that as he got expected profits from mustard farming, he has increased its cultivation this year.
"I've cultivated mustard on 2 bigha of land this year. I hope to get massive yield and good price this time too," he added.
Md Obaidur Rahman Mandal, additional director of Rangpur agricultural region, said farmers have been provided with seeds as incentive this year to encourage them in mustard cultivation.
"We provide all types of technical
assistance for mustard cultivators. Mustard cultivation increases the soil fertility."
On the other hand, it plays an important role in maintaining the balance of the environment. Farmers can grow mustard at a lower cost and less efforts, he added.
Our Sylhet Correspondent reports, farmers expect a good yield of mustard in Sylhet division this season.
A total of 21,994 hectares of land have been brought into mustard farming -- 6435 hectares in Sylhet district, 6125 hectares in Moulvibazar, 5250 hectares in Habiganj and 4184 hectares in Sunamganj.
Nearly 1.3 tonnes of mustard would be produced in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj and Habiganj districts, a DAE report said.
The DAE has set some 18,000 demonstration plots of high yielding varieties in different areas to woo the common and new farmers in the crop, since huge tracts of land remain uncultivated in greater Sylhet during the Robi season.
Some 18,000 flood-hit framers were given one kg seed each for one bigha land in addition to 20 kg fertiliser as incentives in the division.
Although the progress is slow, mustard cultivation is on the rise in the division whereas it was almost neglected just years ago.
A good number of apiculturists were seen engaged in collecting honey from bee boxes kept in the mustard fields in the districts, the official said.
The DAE has also distributed some boxes for honey collection from croplands, he added.
