Naogaon peasants get abundant early winter vegetables yield

NAOGAON, Oct 21: Peasants of the district are happy as they have achieved an abundant yield of the early winter vegetables and getting its fair price in the market.
According to sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Naogaon, some 6,200 hectares of land have been brought under early winter vegetables cultivation during the current Kharif season.
The DAE has also set a target of bringing another 12,500 hectares of land under cultivation of winter vegetables in upcoming Rabi season, the sources added.
Agriculture officials informed among the eleven upazilas of the district, Manda, Badalgachhi, Dhamoirhat and Sadar upazila are best known for vegetables cultivation.
Farmers in these areas are producing early varieties of bean, cauliflower, cabbage, radish, spinach and red spinach.
In the kitchen markets of the district, bean is being sold at Tk. 80 to 90 per kg, radish at Tk. 60 to 70, spinach at Tk. 70, red spinach at Tk. 60; cauliflower at Tk. 50 to 60 per piece and cabbage at Tk. 40 to 60 per piece.
Shamsul Haque and Anwarul Islam of Chakla village under Sadar upazila said peasants of the area are gradually switching to cultivation of different early winter vegetables lessening the traditional paddy farming aiming to get more profit.
Deputy director of district DAE Sirazul Islam said generally the early winter vegetables are more prone to pest attack.
As the growers here are updated and conscious, they find proper solution to handle this type of situation timely with the assistance of field level agriculture officials, he added.
