Nasrat Bewa leads life by begging despite six offsprings well-off

RAJSHAHI, May 30: Despite her five sons and one daughter being provided with respectable profession, unfortunate mother Nasrat Bewa (60) used to lead her life by begging door to door.

At Malanchi Bazar of Bagatipara upazila, Nasrat Bewa was seen to seek alms from people.

She said her husband died ten years ago. She made all her sons and daughter educated by selling fragments of land her husband left.

Even, she used to beg to manage cost of education of the children.

In such way, five of her sons and one daughter have been provided. Her elder son works in a government community clinic and his wife is a local union council member.

Another son runs a business and other three sons work in agricultural farms. Even, she let her only daughter married off to a respectable family. Now, losing all her assets, Nasrat Bewa at her old age has no alternative but to beg door to door for her survival.

Often Nasrat Bewa is seen to walk through Malanchi Bazar with a stick in one hand to beg alms to the people. She said by begging door to door she was managing her daily food somehow.

She said the money she gets as old age allowance is end up in purchasing medicine. As a result, by braving intense heat of summer and rain, she has no alternative but to extend her hands to generous people to manage her daily meal.

From early morning to the afternoon, she moves door to door, shops to shops and the shoppers seeking alms.

In a weeping voice she said her sons and their wives do not provide her with food and clothing. Her elder son Rafiqul works at a government community clinic and her wife is a member of Fagurdiar union council.

She educated all her sons and one daughter hoping they would look after her at her old age but all her hope has been dashed and now she begs in the streets.

She said even after facing utter poverty, she used to educate her children and now none of her sons even feel any necessity to learn her whereabouts. People at Malanchi Bazar expressed sorrow at the present condition of Nasrat Bewa.

Rafiqul Islam, elder son of Nasrat Bewa, said begging turns to a habit for her mother. She cannot adjust with family members of any of her sons.

He admitted that every sons of her have their separate families and most of them work hard to maintain their own families and that is why they did not get time to take care of their mother.

He said it was unfortunate that her mother begs door to door despite she gets old aged allowance. He however said, all his brothers have recently agreed to take care of their mother and refrain her from begging.
