NATORE, Jan 29: Onion farmers of the district are attaining a good yield this season.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), 1400 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the spicy crop this season. It is 200 hectares of land more than the target set by the department.

Growers have already stared harvesting the crop and it will continue till the next month, DAE sources added.

"I have cultivated onion on some 30 decimals spending Tk 3,200," said farmer Aslam Hossain of Boraigram upazila, adding, "I am expecting to make over Tk 30,000 from the land if the market price remains high."

Each kg of onion is being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50 in the retail market. Cultivators are satisfied over the prevailing rate.

"We are getting good price this season than the previous year," said farmer Anarul Islam of Bagatiparar upazila. He also said onion farming is more profitable than growing any other winter vegetables.

Deputy director of DAE Rafiqul Islam said, "We encourage the marginal farmers to grow onion on more land by proving necessary input. Farmers also show a positive response regarding this."
