Lightning strike kills two farmers in Habiganj

HABIGANJ, Sept 24: Two farmers were killed after being struck by lightning in the Pithabari area of Habiganj's Baniachang upazila on Saturday morning. The deceased were identified as Abdul Karim, 65, and Nur Uddin, 50, both residents of Majlishpur village. The tragedy occurred around 9am when the duo was working on a paddy field, said locals. Both of them died on the spot, said upazila project implementation officer Moloy Kumar Das. — UNB

Two children drown in Kishoreganj pond

KISHOREGANJ, Sept 24: Two children, both cousins aged two, drowned in a pond in Gangail Pathanpara village of Kishoreganj's Karimganj upazila on Friday. The deceased were identified as Khadiza, 2, daughter of Ramjan Ali, and Anar, 2, son of Kanchan Mia. The two kids fell into the pond close to their homes while playing near the water body in the afternoon, said Shamsul Alam, officer-in-charge of Karimganj Police Station. As they were missing for a long time, their families and locals started searching for them and recovered their bodies from the pond around 6.30pm. "The kids were rushed to Sadar hospital where doctors declared them dead on arrival," the OC said. — UNB

Elderly couple found dead in Chuadanga

CHUADANGA, Sept 24: An elderly couple was found dead at their house in the Alamdanga municipality area of Chuadanga district on Saturday. The deceased were identified as Najir Uddin, 70, and his wife Farida Khatun, 60, of Puraton Bazar Para in the municipality. Getting no response from Najir Uddin's house till 11:30 am neighbours peeped through the window of the house and found Farida lying in a pool of blood, said Abdullah Alam Mamun, superintendent of Chuadanga Police. On information, police recovered the body of Najir with hands and legs tied up in the bathroom of the house. They later sent the bodies to a local hospital morgue for autopsy. According to local people, Najir was the kingpin of a land forgery syndicate. Police suspected that miscreants might have killed him over land dispute. — UNB
