Man killed 'by nephew' in Chapainawabganj

CHAPAINWABGANJ, June 14: A man was killed and another injured in a land dispute at Dhobpukur Bazar in Shibganj upazila on Friday. The deceased was Nazrul Islam, 55, son of Siddiq Biswas of Upartola village of Mobarakpur Union while the injured was UP member Sabuj Ali Sujan, 32, a resident of the same village. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station Golam Kibria said Nazrul Islam had been at loggerhead with his brother Arfazul Biswas over the boundary of a land. On Friday night, during an argument between them, Arfazul's son Anas Biswas, 18, allegedly stabbed his uncle Nazrul Islam in the stomach several times with a knife. UP member Sabuj Ali Sujan was also stabbed while trying to save him. Locals rescued and took them to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex where doctor declared Nazrul dead. Injured Sujan was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment. — UNB

Youth detained with Yaba pills, pistol in Thakurgaon

THAKURGAON, June 14: The Bangladesh Army on Saturday detained a youth with 470 pieces of yaba tablets, a pistol, blank stamps, foreign currency and a Chinese axe from a cooperative society in Thakurgaon. The operation was carried out around 4 am at Shibganj Bazar under Jamalpur Union in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila. The detainee, identified as Md. Mukul, son of Ainul Munshi of Madhya Parpugi village, was arrested from the office of "Adarsha Khudro Samabay Samiti," a local cooperative society allegedly involved in illegal activities. Acting on intelligence, an army team from the temporary Thakurgaon camp, led by Captain Md. Mehedi Hasan, conducted the raid and cordoned off the cooperative premises. The troops recovered 470 yaba pills, a pistol, 600 signed blank stamps, 30 foreign coins, six foreign currency notes, a Chinese axe and a baton. The estimated market value of the seized yaba pills is around Tk 0.2 million. — BSS

Man killed by lightning strike in Habiganj

HABIGANJ, June 14: A man was killed in a lightning strike this morning while trying to chase cattle away from a grassy field near his home in Kakailchao union under Azmiriganj upazila. The deceased was identified as Alamgir Mia, 40, son of Quddus Mia from Ghardai village. Azmiriganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shafiqul Islam confirmed the incident. According to locals, Alamgir was struck by lightning during rainfall while attempting to drive cattle off a field commonly used for grazing. He collapsed on the spot and was rushed to the Azmiriganj Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. — BSS
