Woman strangled to death
for 70g of gold
Madaripur's RAB-8 has said a woman in Shariatpur town was strangled to death for 6 tolas (around 70 grams) of gold ornaments and cash. RAB said this on Saturday after arresting a suspect, Shahidul Islam Ripon Molla, 50, from Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Friday night -- three days after the murder. Ripon, son of Sonai Molla of Damudya Upazila, confessed during primary interrogation, according to RAB-8 Madaripur Camp Company Commander Mir Monir Hossain. At a media briefing, Monir said, Nazma Begum, 45, was murdered on Tuesday afternoon at her rented flat at Rupnagar of Shariatpur Municipality. Father, son electrocuted
in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA, Oct 25: A father and his son were electrocuted at Bachhati village in Chhaporhati Union of Sundarganj Upazila on Friday. Local sources said father Shahidul Islam and his son Shipon Miah went to a paddy field to connect electricity to an irrigation pump to bring the land under irrigation. When they connected the electricity line to the irrigation pump, Shipon accidentally came into contact with a live wire and was electrocuted. His father was also electrocuted when he tried to rescue his son. — BSS
Coast Guard seizes 179m metres
of fishing nets in Munshiganj
MUNSHIGANJ, Oct 25: A joint operation by the Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries has seized 179.0 million (17.90 crore) metres of illegal fishing nets (current nets) from the Muktarpur area of Munshiganj Sadar upazila. According to a Coast Guard press release signed by Media Officer Md. Siamul Haque, the drive was conducted from 11 pm on Friday to 08:00 am Saturday based on secret information. During the operation, six warehouses and six illegal net-making factories were raided and illegal nets worth around Taka 626.59 crore were confiscated. — BSS
