NILPHAMARI, Oct 28: Farmers of the district expect a bumper production of ginger this season. Ginger plants have been growing excellently across the area as the DAE has been providing technical support to the growers.

Ginger plants are sensitive. Virus and other diseases attack the plants easily. Proper and timely use of insecticides enables the crop to grow as desired.

While contacted one official of DAE said latest technology has been provided to the ginger growers as a result of which huge production is expected this year. Last year the overall production suffered setback due to virus and pest diseases. But this year pest attack was comparatively low and the climate was favourable as well.

Abdur Rahman, a ginger farmer of Itakhola union of Sadar upazila said last year per maund of ginger was sold at a price of Tk 3,000. If the same price persists growers would be benefited, the grower added.

Shahidul Islam, another farmer of Golmunda union under Jaldhaka upazila said they use traditional ginger seeds so the output comes comparatively low. He said hybrid ginger seeds yet not available in the district.

An official of DAE said there is a spice research institute in Bogra district but hybrid ginger seed has not been invented yet. He said Nilphamari district produces more than 50 per cent of the total ginger of the country but still there is no research centre of the spice.

DAE sources around 2,153 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the crop with an expectation to produce 2,1930 tonnes.
