No onion-laden Indian trucks enter Bangladesh

BENAPOLE, Sept 20: No onion- laden truck has entered Bangladesh from India through Benapole Port until Sunday.

On Friday night, only trucks stuck with onion were allowed enter Bangladesh by the Indian Commerce Ministry.

Kartik Chakraborty, general secretary of the C&F Agents Staff Association of Petrapole, said only those onion consignments that have entry in the customs registrar on the September 14 will be exported to Bangladesh.

On Thursday night, 40 to 50 per cent of the onions in the Indian port of Petrapole Port on the other side of Benapole rotted and the onion trucks were taken back by the exporters.

Exporters have soldhose onions at low prices in the local markets in India. As a result, they had to incur a huge loss in tems of money.

On Sunday, 15 trucks loaded with onion were brought back from Ghojadanga Port to Bangao area for export through Petrapole Port.

Bhajan Das, an exporter on the other side, said they would be able to export onion if the previous export price of onions was increased from $.220 to $ 750 per tonne.

Benapole Customs Commissioner Azizur Rahman said that all kinds of goods are being imported and exported through Benapole port now, at present.

Although onion is imported, field level officials have been instructed to release it quickly.
