Onion cultivation goes on in Muksudpur

GOPALGANJ, Jan 20: A good number of farmers in Muksudpur upazila under the district are now passing busy time as onion cultivation has started this season.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj, is monitoring the overall progress of the farming. It has ensured smooth supply of fertilisers, pesticides and other necessary agri-inputs to make the cultivation programme a success.

According to DAE official, the department has fixed a target to cultivate the item on 2,825 hectares of land with the production target of 29,612 tonnes.

Kalidar Mondal, a farmer of Kamlapur village under Muksudpur upazila, said high rate of seed have increased the production this year. "I am growing the crop on two bighas of land spending Tk 70,000 this session", he added.

Samir Kumar Goshwami, deputy director of Gopalganj DAE, said special initiatives have already been taken to produce a record quality of the crop this season.

Several government and private commercial banks including Bangladesh Krishi Bank and some local NGOs have provided loan facilities among the poor onion farmers.

Farmer Latif Sheikh of the upazila said, "I am growing the crop on 156 decimals of land. I expect to get around 165 maunds of production which market price is about Tk 1,75,000."

Dr Mosharaf Hossain, upazila agriculture officer, Muksudpur, said about 6000 farmers of the upazila have brought 700 hectares of land under onion cultivation this season with the production target of 7,000 tonnes.

"Our sub-assistant agriculture officers keep a close monitor to make the cultivation programme a success, the official added.
