SYLHET, Nov 20: Over 700 acres of land remain uncultivated for over the last three years as a damaged embankment couldn't be repaired yet.

The embankment is near the rubber dam of the Khasiamara river was constructed years ago but it got damaged due to excess rainfall and flood around five years ago. The long-desired rubber dam was erected earlier on the left of the embankment. Due to the damage, vast areas of Lakshmipur Haor, Mohabbatpur Haor, Khagura Haor, Rokai Haor, Aruakhai Haor, Tilagaon and Gojaura Haor are uncultivated for years.

Besides, inhabitants of villages under Surma, Lakshmipur and Doarabazar unions have to suffer due to water-logging for the unrepaired embankment during the monsoon.

On the other hand, Shimultola, Girishnagar and Kauagar villages go under water even after a moderate rain.

Villagers said the bordering villages remain inundated during the monsoon.

Former Lakshmipur union council chairman Md Shahjahan said the damaged embankment had become a trouble-point for the 100,000 inhabitants of the villages for several years as it had caused various problems. A vast tract of cropland remains uncultivated. Even some yards remain under water for months.

However, an LGED official said a scheme to repair the embankment has been prepared. The Tk 200 million is under process of approval, he said, adding, "We would start the work soon after the approval of the higher authority."
