RANGPUR, Aug 26: All the X-ray machines of 50-bed Kawnia Upazila Health Complex in Rangpur district have remained out of order for long, causing untold sufferings to the poor patients under the upazila.
According to sources, there are two X-ray machines at the upazila health complex. Of them one has remained inoperative for around 18 years and the other machine became non-functional four years ago.
Due to lack of an X-ray machine in the upazila health complex poor patients are suffering a lot.
Some poor patients of different areas of the upazila said they are forced to go to private diagnostic centres and Medical College Hospital in Rangpur city for X-ray and various medical tests and have to spend a large amount of money.
The elderly patients who are admitted to the health complex are the worst victims as they are compelled to go out of the complex when the doctor advises them to have X-ray done, sources alleged.
Motahara Begum of Khansama area under Kawnia upazila said she came to the health complex for free treatment of her child, but had to borrow money to go to a private diagnostic centre for an X-ray of her child's hand in Rangpur.
A number of aggrieved people of the upazila alleged that owing to poor facilities available at the health complex they have to go to private clinics and hospitals at distant places and spend extra amount of money.
X-ray and pathological tests are much necessary for diagnosing diseases and giving proper treatment, said Upazila Health and Family Planning officer, Dr. Asif Ferdous.
They are facing severe problems as patients do not get the X-ray facilities owing to the dysfunctional X-ray machines in the health complex, he also said.
They have informed the higher authority of the matter but no step has so far been taken in this regard, he added.
