People suffer as key Chandpur road near BIWTA ghat in dilapidated state

CHANDPUR, Oct 12: The half a kilometre road from Boro Railway Station area to Chandpur BIWTA terminal ghat has long been in a dilapidated condition and causing immense sufferings to thousands of passengers and drivers who have to use the road round the clock.

The road, which has numerous potholes, becomes most dangerous at night and remains waterlogged for days during rain, making travel seriously risky and costly.

Locals and drivers of different vehicles told the FE that they have to undergo a lot of inconveniences on this portion of this road.

A few locals said their autorickshaws were on the verge of overturning while they were using the dilapidated road during the night one day.

Around 5,000 auto rickshaws use the stretch of road daily, estimated drivers of Faridganj, Raypur, Haimchar, Luxmipur, Hajiganj, Ramganj -- who carry launch passengers. They pay tolls to the Inland Water Transport Authority (IWTA).

Portion of the road is under the ownership of Bangladesh Railway and BIWTA. They were urged to

repair the road as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, 150 stretches of important paved and unpaved rural roads in Kachua Upazila have been damaged by incessant rainfall recently, causing a lot of hardships for thousands of people in the upazila.

The damaged roads are identified mostly in Pathoir, Bitara, Kadla and Palakhal Unions under Kachua Upazila.

Confirming the poor condition of these roads, Kachua Upazila Engineer Abdul Alim Lytton said many roads have been damaged by recent rainfalls and water overflowing from nearby ponds.
