Plea for ensuring adolescent-friendly environment in society

RANGPUR, Oct 10: Moushumi, experienced what it means to be the civil surgeon of Rangpur district when she symbolically took over the role only for a day.

Girls Takeover campaign, held every year by the Plan International in Bangladesh, to celebrate the International Day of Girl Child.

It is a demand for urgent social and political change to tear down the barriers of discrimination that hold girls back.

Moushumi, a 17 years old adolescent in her role as the symbolic civil surgeon of Rangpur district held a meeting with staff, participated fitness test of vision, discussing and deliberating on a variety of issues on Wednesday.

Later, she took part in mother gathering at Arjiniamot Community Clinic, exchanged views with them, discussed mother, and child health.

She also took part in an adolescent gathering in the upazila heath complex of Gangachara, listened their views, discussed about reproductive health rights and bad impact of child marriage and other girls empowerment issues.

Championing girls' rights is not new to Moushumi who is student of a college. In her community, she took actions to ensure adolescent-friendly environment along with her peers. She also speaks out against child marriage in her community.

Through Girls Takeover, Plan Internationals urge the government to take action at homes, political institutions and the media to end violence, discrimination and injustice against girls and women.

Girls Everyone governments, civil society, corporate, parents, men, women, and boys needs to understand what gender discrimination looks like, their role in it and how they can eliminate it.
