SYLHET Oct 24: The well-known GouranagZaminderbari has been in a deplorable state due to lack of attention by the Sunamgaj district or upazila administration for unknown reasons.

The historic structures stand on about 10 km off the Sunamganj district town and once used to attract a good number of visitors, including enthusiastic people and students as well from the neighbouring areas. But, unfortunate]y things are almost different by now as some local gangs gather on the depleting structures in the evening for gambling and other unsocial activities, allegedly a number of locals.

Even sometimes, they gather during daytime, causing much annoyanceamong the neighbouringpeole. But, nobody makes any protest.

According to the different publications, Rajendra Kumar Chwodhruy and RakeshRanjanChowdury were the Zaminders of the estate in 1800. It got widespread focus through Nagendra Kumar Chowdhruy, the last bright man in the dynasty.

There are 6 large building structures, including Darbahmohal, Andarmohal, Rangmohal, kitchen, Jalshaghar etc. all in poor states with unique earth works on their walls. Huge trees and ponds are there too to attract a good number of visitors almost every day. However, a good number of trees had been felled and taken away by some locals in recent years.

In the 2018 the then Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Rafiqul Islam initiated some works to protect the Zamindarbari as anarcheaological site.

Accordingly, a team of officials and experts led by the Director of the Department of Archeology for Chittagong &Sylhet divisions Dr. Md.Ataur Rahman visited the location and assured of taking steps for preserving the structures as archaeologically important ones. District and upazila officials were also present.

Some signs were also hung around for protecting the historically important site. But since after that there had been no step as yet.

Locals demanded immediate steps for protecting the archaeological site. Otherwise, valuable things would be traceless soon, they apprehended.
