Photo shows a large plot of summer vegetables inundated by excessive rains and runoff from the upstream in Rajnagar upazila of Moulvibazar district — FE Photo SYLHET, July 19: The last one week's rains and runoff from the upstream have damaged crops on over 2,109 hectares of land in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts of Sylhet region.
The total number of farmers affected by the calamity stood at 22,406.
Contacted, an official at the Sylhet divisional office of the Department of Agricultural Extension told this correspondent today that Aus paddy on 1,286 hectares of land was lost to the calamity affecting 11085 farmers and Aman seedbeds on 155 hectares of land were inundated hitting 2,850 farmers.
Besides, summer vegetables on 538 hectares of land went under water affecting 3,915 farmers and fruit orchards on 20 hectares of land got damaged hitting 405 farmers.
The total land areas damaged in the calamity stood at 1,709 hectares with 18,256 farmers affected.
On the other hand, in Moulvibazar district, 920 farmers were badly affected as Aush paddy on 248 hectares of land were damaged in flood caused by rain while 1815 farmers have been affected as Aman seedbeds on 100 hectares of land got damaged due to a breach on the Manu riverbank embankment causing inundation at places amid excessive rains.
Summer vegetables on about 100 hectares of land were also damaged affecting 1.415 farmers in different upazilas of the district.
The number of affected farmers stood at 4,150 in Moulvibazar Sadar, Srimangal, Komolganj, Juri, Barlekha, Kulaura and Rajnagar upazilas.
Deputy assistant director of DAE, Moulvibazar, ASM Farhad, said, "We are yet to make any assessment on the extent of crop damage. However, it will take some time." "However the affected poor farmers would get government assistance for the next crop," he added.
