Rajshahi DAE eyes bumper mango yield

RAJSHAHI, May 19: Despite inclement climatic condition, a bumper production of mango is expected in Rajshahi region this year. The Department of Agriculture Extension is Rajshahi said, around 600,000 tonnes of mango may be produced in Rajshahi region during the current season unless there is no devastating storm or natural catastrophes further.

According to the DAE sources, in Rajshahi, in Chapainawabganj district mango has been cultivated on 26,150 hectares of land and the production target has been earmarked by 244,000 tonnes, at the same time mango has been cultivated on 12,671 hectares of land in Naogaon district with an production target of 1,61,242 tonnes while in Natore district mango has been cultivated on 4,823 hectares of land with a production target of 56,021 tonnes of mango.

DAE sources in Rajshahi informed, last year mango was cultivated on 16,961 hectares of land but this year that increased on 17,463 hectares with 2,426,189 matured (fruit bearing) mango trees. If the climatic condition remained favourable, there would be produced 217,750 tonnes of quality mangoeks in the district.

According to an estimate, there has been large number of mango trees in Charghat and Bagha upazilas of the district. In Charghat there are 552,450 mango trees on 3,810 hectares of land and 11,96, 810 trees on 8,368 hectares of land in Bagha upazila of the district.

Shafiur Rahman Shafi, a mango farmer of Monigram area under Bagha upazila, said this year there was a huge flowering of mango and there was no haze or mist during the flowering time and a bright sunshine saved the flowers from being attacked with pests. Absence of storm and mild rainfall after the flowering also helped smooth development of green mangoes in entire Rajshahi region. As a result, the mango farmers were expecting a good harvest of mango this year.

He expressed the hope that the quality mangoes like Gopalbhog, Langra, Khirsapat, Amrapali would start appearing in the market within next fortnight and other kinds of mangoes like Totapur, Mallika, Krishanbhog, Fazli and Ashina would start to be harvested from middle of June.
