Rangpur cultivators expect good yield of squash

RANGPUR, Jan 9: The squash cultivators of different char areas under Rangpur district are expecting a good yield of their produce this season due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-inputs.

Previously, a many char lands remained fallow over the years but the scenario has changed now with introduction of modern technology.

Presently, the farmers are getting able to grow crops even on fallow char lands using latest technology. Different varieties of crops including squash and pumpkin are being grown abundantly in the char areas of the region.

During a recent visit to several areas of the district it was found the farmers busy nurturing their squash fields with enthusiasm. Farmers are expecting to start harvesting of their produce within next 10 to 15 days.

Sabir Mia, a farmer at Char Pallimari village under Kawnia Upazila told The Financial Express that he cultivated squash on 35 decimals of land during this season and the condition of its growth is satisfactory. Smooth supply of water and agri-inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides has boosted its cultivation, he also said.

Rubel Hossain, a farmer of Char Purbo Mahipur village of Gangachara upazila said he has been growing pumpkin on charlands for the last few years. This season he has cultivated squash instead of pumpkin on his land and is expecting high yield and good profit from its sale.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources, thousands of farmers of the region are engaged in different crops cultivation including squash on the sandy lands and earning good profit.

Crop farming on sandy lands is playing a significant role in mitigating poverty of the people living in char areas in the region, sources added.
