Rangpur eyes good bitter gourd yield this season

RANGPUR, Apr 02: The bitter gourd (Korola) growers across the district are hopeful about achieving a good yield of their produce this season due to a favourable weather condition.

The growers are also ecstatic to get higher price of their produce which made them optimistic to cultivate the vegetable next season as well.

While visiting different areas of the district it was found the farmers busy nurturing their bitter gourd fields. Some were found spraying medicine and pesticides on bitter gourd field to protect the vegetable from pest or disease attack. Many farmers who cultivated the vegetable early were found harvesting their produces with enthusiasm.

Due to good profit the peasants are getting more interested in the cultivation of different varieties of vegetables including bitter gourd in recent years than the cultivation of paddy, sources alleged

Sabu, a farmer at Baniapara village at Taraganj Upazila told The Financial Express that he cultivated bitter gourd on 30 decimals of land during this season and the condition of its growth is satisfactory. Smooth supply of agri-inputs has boosted its farming, he added.

Suresh Chandra, another farmer of Hindupara village at Mithapukur upazila said he has already earned Tk 10,000 by growing bitter gourd on 25 decimals of land and is hopeful of getting more profit from the vegetable during the rest of the year.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said good price as well as huge demand has encouraged the cultivators to cultivate bitter gourd and some other vegetables on a large scale this year. Use of modern technology also enhanced its production, sources added.
