Rangpur peasants eye excellent arum yield

RANGPUR, June 25: Arum growers of the district are expecting an excellent yield of their produce this season as a congenial weather condition has been prevailing in the region.

The peasants of the region are also satisfied with the profit from the sale of their produce in markets owing to its good price, sources said.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur sources said the atmosphere, moderate rainfall and soil of the region are also congenial to the farming of different varieties of vegetables including arum.

Solaiman Mia, a farmer of Nabdiganj area at Pirgachha upazila told The Financial Express that he has changed his financial condition by cultivating arum during the last five years.

This year he has been getting good yield and satisfactory price of his produce from the beginning of harvest, he added.

Monnaf, another arum grower of Boiriganj village in Mithapukur upazila said he prefers farming arum due to high profit.

He cultivated taro variety of arum (Mukhi kachu) on 40 decimals of land this season.

During last few years he has been getting a good yield as well as handsome profit from farming of the crop, he also said.

Some arum growers expressed their satisfaction over the financial benefit they get by farming it besides cultivating other crops.

According to DAE the department is providing the farmers with necessary advices and assistances to enhance farming of vegetables including arum.

Due to rising demand commercial cultivation of arum is increasing across the region, sources added.
