Rangpur zone eyes excellent onion yield

RANGPUR, Mar 08: The onion growers at different areas under Rangpur agriculture region are optimistic about an excellent yield of their produce this season owing to congenial weather condition as well as timely supply of required agri-inputs.

Sources said the farmers of the region have been earning good profit through the cultivation of the crop in recent years which is encouraging them to enhance its cultivation this season.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur official sources, onion was cultivated on more than 8,000 hectares of lands under the region this season.

DAE sources said that the atmosphere, moderate rainfall and soil of the region are also conducive to the farming of various spicy crops including onion.

Saiful, an onion grower of village Char Thakurdas in Kawnia upazila of Rangpur told this correspondent that he has cultivated onion on around 20 decimals of land this year and is optimistic about achieving a good harvest and profit owing to its rising market price. Harvesting of the crop is expected to begin at the end of this month, he also said.

Many growers said that last year they had earned satisfactory profit from its cultivation which encouraged them this season to cultivate it on large scale. Cultivation of spicy crops is more lucrative than cultivation paddy and many other crops, they added.

DAE sources said the department has taken adequate measures to increase the farming and production of onion and some other spicy crops in the region in order to decline dependency on import.

DAE has been providing the cultivators with quality seeds, necessary inputs and helping the farmers for the utilisation of modern technologies, sources added.

Due to good yield and higher market price in comparison with other varieties crops its farming is on the rise during last few years across the region.

Cultivation of spicy crops is also playing a vital role in changing socio-economic condition of the peasants of the region, sources added.
