Red spinach brings good profit for Nilphamari cultivators

NILPHAMARI, Nov 19: Thousands of farmers are becoming economically profited by cultivating red spinach (Lal Shak) in the district. The vegetable is very popular and people irrespective rich and poor purchase it in the kitchen markets. The vegetables shops of the district are now full of this vegetable.

DAE sources said the vegetable is cultivated in around 3,000 hectares of land in this season. It is cultivated mainly in the high land and the process of cultivation is very easy in comparison to others vegetables. A farmer can earn over Tk 30,000 by cultivating the vegetable in one bigha (30 decimal) of land.

Mahbubar Rahman, a farmer of Ketkibari union under Domar upazila, said he cultivated red spinach in one bigha of land where his production was 25 maunds. He sold all of his produce at Tk 40,000.

The grower said his production cost was Tk 7,000 including tillage of land, seed, weeding, fertilising and so on.

Its growth attains one foot within 45 days of the sprinkling of the seed. At the stage growers usually harvest it to sale in the kitchen markets.

One kg of the leafy vegetable is being sold at Tk 40 in the markets.

Sources said most of the farmers cultivate the vegetable on commercial basis to sell in the market and its cultivation increasing every year.

Sources added a significant portion of the vegetable is now being transported to the capital city by the traders of the district for making huge profit out of it.
