Road accidents kill six in three districts

A total of six people were killed in separate road accidents in Dinajpur, Joypurhat and Gazipur districts on Saturday and Friday, report agencies.

In Dinajpur, two members of a family were killed and another was injured after a truck knocked them down in front of M Abdur Rahim Medical College and Hospital in Dinajpur district early Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Ali, son of Makbul Hossain, and Azgar, brother-in-law of Ali and son of Azizul Haque.

Md Zakaria, sub-inspector at Kotwali Police Station, said the speeding truck hit the trio at the Khoarer intersection at 5am when they were on their way to a relative's place.

The crash left Ali and Azgar dead on the spot, the officer said. "The injured, Makbul, another brother-in-law of Ali, is being treated at Abdur Rahim Medical College and Hospital. His condition is critical."

Police have seized the truck. "Efforts are on to nab its driver," the officer said.

In Joypurhat, grandfather and grandson were killed and three others injured in a road accident on the Molamgari-Panchshira road in the Molamgari area under Kalai upazila of the district on Friday night.

The deceased were identified as Nazrul Islam, 55, son of Achir Uddin, and Sakib Hossain, 5, son Mahmudul Hossain, residents of Poont Shikta Uttarpara village in Kalai upazila of the district.

"The accident occurred when grandfather and grandson were returning to their home in Kalai upazila on auto van from Dupchanchia upazila in Bogura district. At that time a potato laden truck hit their auto van coming from the opposite direction around 8.30pm. Grandfather and grandson fell under the truck and both died on the spot and two other passengers, including the auto van driver were seriously injured", officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalai Police Station S M Moinuddin said.

Police seized the truck but its driver and helper managed to flee the scene, OC said.

An unusual death case has been registered, the OC added.

In Gazipur, a 50-year-old woman and her granddaughter were killed and two others injured after a truck rammed into a three-wheeler in Gazipur's Tongi Friday, police said.

The deceased were identified as Rowshan Ara Begum and her six-month-old granddaughter Raisa Islam. The injured were the child's mother Rita Akhter and three-wheeler driver Rubel.

The crash occurred in the Silmun area around 4:30pm when the speeding truck hit the three-wheeler, killing Rowshan and Raisa, who were going to Station Road of Tongi from Mirerbazar, on the spot, Ashraful Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tongi East Police Station, said.
