BOGRA, Mar 15: A good number of peasants of Dhunot upazila in the district are worried due to massive root rotting of their Boro saplings.

Farmers said low quality seed is the main reason of the incident. The growers are suffering after 30 to 35 days of its plantation.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said some 16,160 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of Boro in Dhunot upazila.

Hundreds of affected peasants submitted allegation to Dhunot UNO against a seed company for noticeable punishment.

Some affected farmers said they bought the seed from Elangi Bazar. Their saplings have been rotting from the last week.

They urged the authority concerned to take an immediate step in this connection.

"I have cultivated some nine bighas of land under Boro cultivation this season spending Tk 81,000 but all of the growing saplings started rotting from the last week," said farmer Abdul Alim of Naldanga village.

Proprietor of the seed company said their seed is good but the fertilser that has been given to the crop land may be adulterated.

Upazila agriculture officer Jahangir Alam said, "We have made a committee to investigate the actual reason. We will take action after getting the report."

UNO Razia Sultana said, "We will take step against the company after examine their seed."
