RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, June 24: The researchers and also thesis group students of Rajshahi University (RU) have been facing problem to do lab-based research work due to lack of adequate and modern equipment in the laboratories.

So, most of them are going to different outsides institutional labs including Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) to conduct their lab-based research, sources said.

On information from the concerned authorities of the university said as the lower budget allocation than the proposed each year is liable behind this scenario.

However, the RU administration has been trying to resolve such inadequacy problem.

A good number of researchers of different higher research institutes and departments said, "Due to lack of modern lab instruments in the laboratories we cannot do the research work properly. Even many of us are ending the research work without finish all steps which is deadly problem for research."

Sources said some 26 departments out of 56 at the university are teaching on scientific research while many of these have no own research laboratory facilities. Besides, the remaining others have no sufficient lab equipments to run full-fledged research.

Only 25 per cent to 30 per cent tools are available in these labs.

Few departments those were newly introduced have not yet been set up laboratory.

Consequently, the numbers of researchers and students are reducing in these labs day by day.

Even they are going to the adjoining RUET campus, rice research centre and BCSIR to do lab research.

"I cannot give my attention on research while I come here in each morning due to shortage of equipment in the lab", said Mushroom Research Expert and also a teacher of the Botany Department of RU Dr Imtiaj Ahmed.

Meanwhile, fearing to complete the whole research work many teachers are disagreed to supervise the fellow in the M.Phil and PhD level, he also added.

Information from the sources of university academic section office, 52 researchers in M.Phil and 119 researchers in PhD were admitted in the 2012-2013 academic session at RU.

Later, in 2013-2014 session some 118 for M.Phil and 54 for PhD, in 2014-15 153 in M.Phil and 37in PhD programmes, in 2015-2016, the number researcher was 116 in MPhil and 51 PhD and in 2016-2017 session 49 researchers for M.Phil and only 22 for PhD were admitted at the different departments and institutes.

An official of RU treasurer office informed that although the research cost has been increased but the university do not get fund proportionately.

The budget for research works allocated into two categories, one allocation comes directly from the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a research fund.

Another is spends on the various research project from the total fund of UGC.

Each RU researchers get Tk 0.1 million for solo research work and Tk 0.2 million for joint research from twice funds.

But these funds are not sufficient to complete a full-fledged and standard research work, research fellows claimed.
