RAJSHAHI, Mar 25: Law education is gradually spreading due to demand for it. Currently seven public universities in the country are offering higher education on law.
The universities are: Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, Islamic University, Bangladesh and Barisal University (BU).
Indeed, expansion of the law affairs education among these universities the Law Department of RU is a traditional and precedent one.
The Department of Law at RU is one of the pioneer institutes for legal education in Bangladesh as well as in South Asia. Since the inception of the university in 1953, there was one of its six founding subjects.
Then the Law Department has created a proud legacy and established itself as a prominent institute in the field of legal education in Bangladesh. But academic activities was launched in 1954 with two years long Law (pass course).
Earlier the department started offering Bachelor of Jurisprudence (B.Jur.) and Master of Jurisprudence (M.Jur.) programmes in the years 1970 and 1973 consecutively. In 1973, the department was named as
Jurisprudence. Later B.Jur and M.Jur programmes were renamed as LLB (Honours) and LLM respectively in the years 1976 and 1981.
Presently it is offering four-year LLB (honours) programme and a one-year LLM programme. Besides, it also runs a one year evening LLM (ELLM) course for professionals and another one year masters in Police Science (MPS) course at Sarda Police Academy for the BCS (Police) cadres.
The department also awards postgraduate research programmes including M.Phil and PhD degrees.
At present there are 28 teachers with about six hundred students while around 110 student's gets admission each year.
The students of the department have been passed almost hundred percent at the examinations of Bar Council and JSC (Judicial Service Commission) through the ages.
Among the past faculty members internationally famed expert on the law of the sea Prof Dr Habibur Rahman, former Chairman of Human Right Commission Dr Mizanur Rahman, present member of Law Commission Prof Dr M Shah Alam and former chief justice and chief adviser to the caretaker government late Justice Habibur Rahman are a few notable figures of Law Department at RU.
The department organises seminars, symposiums and workshops on children and women's rights, inheritance, judicial review, the civil and justice system regularly participation with noted law scholars of the country and abroad.
Recently it has organised an international seminar on "Women's participation in the Justice System" in association with US Agency for International Development (USAID) under its Justice for All (JFA) programme.
