RAJSHAHI, May 13 (BSS): The Rajshahi Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (RWASA) is going to implement a mega project aimed at supplying safe drinking water among the city dwellers.
The project titled 'RWASA Surface water Treatment' will be implemented with an estimated cost of Tk 41.50 billion to remove the existing water supply related problems.
It has provisions of installing 26.5km main pipelines and 48 km primary and secondary pipelines for installing a strong water supply network.
This was revealed in the RWASA's first board meeting held at its conference hall here yesterday afternoon with Board Chairman Prof Shamim Uz Zaman Basunia in the chair.
RWASA Managing Director Sultan Abdul Hamid and other members Aftab Hossain Pramanik, Shaheen Akter Rainy, Shahadat Hossain, Dr Tabibur Rahman Sheikh and Dr Nawshad Ali were present at the meeting.
Under the project, water from the Padma River will be supplied to households for drinking purpose after necessary treatment.
The mega project has been adopted to supply fresh drinking water under a 40-year water supply management master plan.
Giving a salient feature of the project Sultan Abdul Hamid apprised the meeting that the project will carry water through pipeline from the Padma River, purify it and then supply it to city houses.
The surface water-based plant with a capacity of treating 20-crore liter water daily will be set up at Farhadpur, 26.5 km west from the city centre under Godagari upazila by June 2022.
From this water purification plant, fresh drinking water will be supplied to all 30 wards in Rajshahi City Corporation and its surrounding areas as well as 11 wards of Katakhali and Naohata municipal areas.
All old pipelines and hydrants of the city will also be repaired and renovated under the project.
"We are very much hopeful of completing the acquiring process of 53.31 acres of land for the mega project by next June," he added. He also said the RWASA has, so far, brought more than 0.40 million city dwellers under its water supply coverage.
"So far, we have brought 73.28 per cent of Rajshahi city's total around 0.55 million population under the water supply coverage," said Sultan Hamid, while talking to the news agency on the issue on Monday.
Currently, 77.8 million litres water are being extracted through 96 production pumps in all 30 wards under Rajshahi City Corporation daily against total demand of 113.3 million litres.
There are 712.50 km pipelines to distribute the extracted water. "We have also completed the feasibility study on Surface Water Treatment Plant in Rajshahi WASA at a cost of around Tk 18.9 million," added Hamid.
