SYLHET, Jan 12: The Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has taken up a project to develop the Sylhet Central Bus terminal, located in the city's Kodomtoli area of South Surma.

World Bank (WB) is set to provide Tk 1.17 billion for the project, officials informed. Work on the project would start soon and would be completed by June 2020.

Over a thousand buses start from the bus terminal everyday to various destinations in the region as well as to the capital and other districts.

Established on an area of 7.5 acres of land, the central bus terminal plays key role in the region's road communication.

But there had been no sitting arrangement for the waiting passengers. The urinals and toilet facilities are almost unusable as there is none to look into the affairs of the terminal's management, alleged a number of transport workers and traders of the terminal area.

However, SCC is supposed to look after the terminal established at the divisional city. On the other hand, there is none to take measures on the allegations of the passengers.

Although some private operators have very limited arrangement for only their passengers, the facilities are of very poor quality. Most of the operators even do not bother about the matter.

Besides, about a hundred makeshift shops have been established on the terminal while there is no arrangement for cleaning the whole area regularly causing much hassle for the passengers. The situation gets worse during the rainy season.

An official at the SCC said a team from the World Bank visited the site and sat with the SCC mayor and other officials in October last year and stressed for starting the project works by February 2019.

Accordingly, bidding was floated recently. The project includes, setting a dumping ground at a cost of Tk 560 million while the rest Tk 510 million is to be spent for the infrastructural development of the terminal.

Under the project, separate entry and parking zone for vehicles of different routes would be set up. The project works are set to be completed by June 2020, the official added.
