RAJSHAHI, Sept 08: Although the Central Press of Rajshahi University (RU) was upgraded into offset press from the letter press, added with some modern machinery but not included any skilled manpower to operate these machines yet. Even the work of designing is running with a hired designer.
As a result, due to lack of skilled manpower, there is a virtually incomplete condition at RU printing press.
So the different departments, institutes and even various socio-voluntary organisations of the university could not be printing works here even annual diary and calendar of the university have been publishing from the outside press.
Concerned sources said, such press is using to publish merely for exam sheets and some essential papers. It has become the demand of time to mobilize the printing press appointing with some skilled craftsmen.
Earlier, RU was the first introduce the letter press technology in the Rajshahi region with latest Heidelberg printing machine in 1966 then.
At that time someone could not bring this machine either the individual level or business purposes.
Later, in 1985 a businessman of the Rajshahi city out of RU Firstly bring such machine.
Sources also informed that letter printing press dissolved in the Rajshahi region in 1995. From then offset printing press introduced in the region while RU entered into this technology in 2011 but the tasks were not agreeable yet.
At last in 2015, RU administration purchased a modern Heidelberg Cord Offset machine with Tk 1.4 million, a binding machine worth Tk 0.6 million, and some others essentials tools.
Presently, there are three printing machines, two cutter machines and a modern binding machine but the technician is only one.
Since the established this printing press had been running with a technician. So the many times the printing work is handling with the helper, cleaner, and peon.
Helper Kamal Hossain who has been operating the printing machine since nineteen years long while the post of assistant machine man is lying vacant last fifteen years.
But here has no graphic designer which works is implementing with hired from the outside so that university spends huge money. The press failed to do good work due to working with inefficient manpower; on the other hand, authorities cannot do the work timely.
Prof. Md. Istiaqe Ahmed, administrator of RU Printing Press said, presently sixbinder, three proof reader, three data entry operator, three office assistances, and 11 cleaners are working here but most of them inexperienced for the work of the off-set press.
