Speakers stress research on agri-issues for food security

SYLHET, Nov 09: Speakers at an event on Wednesday laid emphasis on continuing research by experts on agricultural issues related to long-term projection on food security.

They said as an agri-dependent country, there is a huge scope in doing research in Bangladesh. They also focus on raising standard of higher studies in agri sector of the country.

"Farm research had contributed much in the densely-populated country's food production during the last few decades", they said.

Vice-chancellor of the Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) Professor Golam Shahi Alam inaugurated the six-day training on 'Advance agricultural research methodology', for the teachers. Senior scientist Prof Dr Gray James Wingenbach of the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M, USA will be the chief trainer of at the training programme.

As many as 40 teachers are taking part at the special training organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with the assistance of the World Bank.

The chief guest said alongside different other institutions and varsities, the SAU had expanded its research activities in recent years. It would continue further in future. He further said, "We should focus on modern agriculture research".

Prof Dr Md Torikul Alam presided over the inaugural function.

Prof Dr Md Matiar Rahman, Prof Dr Mritynjoy Biswas, Prof Dr Mrityunjoy Kunda and Dr MM Mahbub Alam were present on the occasion, among others.
